South Atlantic Health Care Essential Employee Spotlight
At South Atlantic Health Care (SAHC), we couldn’t operate without our team of hard-working and dependable social workers. We strive to be a place where these selfless heroes feel appreciated and supported. For this reason, we’re celebrating National Social Worker’s Month by highlighting one of our outstanding team members and why they love what they do.
Employee Spotlight: Angel Mims
While we have so many wonderful team members, today’s highlight is our Director of Social Services at Greer Rehabilitation and Healthcare, Angel Mims.
Angel has been a social worker for two years and is a MSW candidate at Limestone University. She’s hoping to complete her coursework by July 2021. Here, she relates her thoughts on why social workers are essential.
“I feel that social workers are essential because we have a unique job to provide care for people from a holistic approach. I have been in the health care field for over 19 years as a clinician, and I have found that sometimes patients want me to stop and listen and talk to them to help them with their mental health or emotional needs.
In my current role as a social worker, I have more liberty to talk to people and listen because it’s part of my job. By doing something so simple, I have seen the morale of patients go up.”
As with many social workers, Angel most appreciates connecting with the residents at SAHC:
“My favorite part about being a worker at SAHC is hearing the residents’ stories about their past lives, families, careers, dreams etc. Many residents have shared some pretty amazing stories about their lives and have also imparted some wisdom to me, which I am very grateful for. These are some of the treasures that I get to experience working with SAHC.”
Being so involved in caring for others can be taxing. Thankfully, Angel knows how to practice self-care:
“When I am not at work, I’m buried in a schoolbook or spending time with my boyfriend & family/ friends… I believe in self-care, so it’s very important for me to find some time in my busy life to take care of myself. Whether it’s listening to music, walking, taking long drives, family time, enjoying some comedy or a debate with my boyfriend, taking an extra-long nap or teaching myself that it’s ok to take a break from projects to relax my mind & body”.”
According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, social work is one of the fastest-growing professions in the country. More professionals are needed to support issues faced in schools, hospitals, mental health centers, nonprofits, corporations, and other organizations.
This March, show some extra kindness and appreciation to those who do so much for our society. Reach out to a social worker and thank them for their dedication.
Post your message of appreciation to your social media using the hashtag #SocialWorkMonth #SocialWOrkIsEssential and #NASW so others can share their gratitude.
